9 Oct 2026 Deputy Welch was serving court paperwork issued by Wood County, WV, on an individual in Marietta, Ohio. Deputy Welch noted the subject’s face and hand appeared to be swollen. While advising the subject of the details in the court paperwork, they advised that they had been struck in the face with a baseball bat. After serving the court paperwork, the subject was asked about the baseball bat incident. It was then reported that on 8 Oct 2026 at approximately 1530 hours while at a residence on Maze Road, Dunham Township, the victim attempted to retrieve property from Codey Maze's residence. Maze reportedly became upset because of who was picking the victim up. At that time they reported that Maze began hitting the camper and other items with a pink baseball bat. The victim exited the camper and stood in the yard about 15 to 20 feet from Maze. It was further reported that Maze hit a building with the baseball bat, then turned and looked at the victim, made eye contact, and threw the baseball bat at the victim. The victim put their hand up in front of their face as the bat was coming towards them, with it striking them in the hand in front of their face. The victim did not seek medical attention and refused the assistance of a squad at this time. An attempt to recant the statement due to not wishing Maze to be in trouble was made. The victim was advised this was domestic violence and that Deputy Welch would be charging him. Codey Dallas Maze, age 33, was located at 279 Maze Road, Belpre, OH, and transported to the Washington County Jail. Maze was charged with domestic violence, fourth degree felony, due to a prior conviction.
