Mounted Unit
Most deputies do not weigh 1,200 pounds; they
do not like hay and oats, and do not require a regular brushing.
Gambles Lucky is not your average deputy. He is
a 5 year-old registered quarter horse.
In January 1997, Washington County became the 28th Ohio county
to join the Buckeye State Mounted Deputies Association.
Deputy David M. Tornes attended a two-day training
seminar in April 1997 and March 2003, and successfully completed
the training.
Deputy Tornes and Gambles Lucky work such functions
as the Washington County Fair, Barlow Fair, and the Lowell Springfest
and Octoberfest. The duo will participate in parades upon request.
One advantage to having a mounted unit is better
visibility during crowd control.
Gambles Lucky stands 16 hands high so his rider,
Deputy Tornes, can see quite a distance over a crowd.
Lucky can also cover four times the ground a man
could cover on foot.
