Bike Patrol
One of the first Deputy Sheriff’s to pedal
against crime was Sgt. John T. Underwood, who underwent his
training in Allen County, Ohio.
We are one of the first counties to use a Bicycle
Patrol in Ohio.
The Sheriff is in charge of the bike patrol.
One key benefit of the Bike Patrol is stealth.
Suspects do not hear an officer coming, which makes catching
someone in an illegal act easier.
Mobility is also a perk of the patrol. A bike
can follow a fleeing suspect into places a car could not go.
Deputies on bikes are also easier to stop and talk to. They
are more visible in the communities they patrol than they would
otherwise be inside their cars.
The officers must complete a combination of classroom
and practical riding exercises.
They learn everything from traffic regulations,
to nomenclature and safety practices, to the equipment necessary
for this specialized brand of patrolling.
