On 23 May 13 Deputy Sheriff McConnell arrested Nathan A. Mercer, age 36, 710 King Avenue Apt. B, Cutler, for .17 breath OVI, driving under a suspended license, failure to control and littering. Deputy McConnell encountered Mr. Mercer’s stopped vehicle near the intersection of Reese Road and State Route 550 in Barlow Township. The vehicle had substantial damage to the passenger side, with the outer panel of the rear door having been sheared off. Mr. Mercer claimed he swerved to avoid a deer and struck a guardrail. Mr. Mercer had a strong odor of alcohol and attempted to hide a partially full beer can by throwing it under his car. When transported to the Washington County Jail, Mr. Mercer tested .180 BAC.

On 23 May 13 Debra McGuire, age 59, 190 Oak Drive, Little Hocking, reported in mid-April she paid an individual a down payment of $1,000 to remove five trees on her property and the individual has not returned to complete the work and has not refunded her money. A neighbor of Ms. McGuire paid the same individual $500 to remove trees on his property and has not had any work completed either. This case remains under investigation (1010).

On 23 May 13 Deputy Sheriff Carr arrested Steven L. O’Brien, age 24, 172 Stanley Road, Lower Salem, for domestic violence and driving under a suspended license. Mr. O’Brien’s wife, Carla, age 21, confronted him at their residence over discrepancies in their bank account and his possible use of drugs. When Mrs. O’Brien thereafter attempted to leave the residence, Mr. O’Brien jumped on the hood of her car and pulled on the windshield wipers. Mr. O’Brien proceeded to follow his wife in his truck, repeatedly passing her and attempting to force her to stop. On three occasions Mr. O’Brien struck the rear bumper of his wife’s vehicle as they traveled at speeds up to 55 mph. Mr. O’Brien admitted striking his wife’s vehicle and stated he was attempting to get her to stop so he could talk to her. Mrs. O’Brien said her husband’s actions caused her to fear for her safety.

The following individuals were processed into the Washington County Jail:

Nathan Andrew Mercer, age 36, 710 King Avenue Apt. B, Cutler, for .17 breath OVI, driving under a suspended license, failure to control and littering, all misdemeanors.
