On 12 May 12 Violet Messer, age 79, 23165 State Route 339, Beverly, reported she fled her home following an altercation with her husband, Robert, age 71. Mrs. Messer said she was discussing the rights to their property with her husband when he became upset and grabbed her by the neck. As Mrs. Messer pulled away from her husband her necklace was broken and she stated she could “see the hate in his eyes.” Determining Mrs. Messer feared for her safety during the incident, Deputy Sheriff Reeder arrested Mr. Messer for domestic violence and transported him to the Washington County Jail.

On 12 May 12 Deputy Sheriff McPeek and the Devola, Oak Grove and Warren fire departments responded to a fire at the home of Jason Casto, age 34, at 1155 Huck Road, Lowell. Mr. Casto was asleep inside when his wife arrived at the home and observed smoke. She woke her husband and the two escaped without injury. The fire, the origin of which is unknown, fully engulfed the home before it could be extinguished. The home and its contents are a total loss. The state Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to ascertain the fire’s case.

On 12 May 12 Scott Shankland, age 42, 27335 State Route 7 Lot 22, Marietta, reported he was watching television when the trailer’s smoke alarm activated. Along with his dog, Mr. Shankland exited the home without injury. The Reno Fire Department responded and brought the fire under control but was unable to save its contents. The fire appears to have originated in an area where the furnace, circuit breaker and hot water tank were located. No foul play is suspected (912).

The following individuals were processed into the Washington County Jail:

Dorothy Mae Smith, age 43, 1021 Muskingum Terrace Apt. B, Marietta, for disorderly conduct by intoxication, a misdemeanor. Smith was arrested at her residence by Patrolman Estes of the Marietta City Police Department and processed into the Washington County Jail on 12 May 12 at 7:55 pm.

Robert Lee Messer, age 71, 23165 State Route 339, Beverly, for domestic violence, a misdemeanor. Messer was arrested at his residence by Deputy Sheriff Reeder and processed into the Washington County Jail on 12 May 12 at 8:01 pm.

Gary Wayne Harbison, age 44, 101 Muskingum Drive, Marietta, for failure to appear, assault and criminal damaging, all misdemeanors. Harbison was arrested on Front Street by Patrolman Newell of the Marietta City Police Department and processed into the Washington County Jail on 12 May 12 at 11:35 pm.
