AUTHORITIES SEARCHING FOR AGGRAVATED MURDER SUSPECT

Local law enforcement was alerted yesterday that a suspect wanted for aggravated murder in Zanesville, OH was possibly seeking refuge in western Washington County. The suspect, Joey Hampton, age 21, last known address 1801 Ridge Avenue, Zanesville, reportedly fled after a drive by shooting that left a twenty-two year old male dead on 10 Sep 11. A known dealer of crack cocaine, Hampton allegedly shot at the victim because he was messing with his family and he wanted the victim to take him seriously.

The information the Sheriff’s Office received was that Hampton was at the residence of Phillip Smith, age 47, at 9640 State Route 555, Cutler, and traveling around the western part of the county in either a grey Chrysler Sebring or a red Chevy Monte Carlo. Coupling informant information along with investigative data, the Sheriff’s Office obtained a “no knock” search warrant for Smith’s residence. Smith is also a known purveyor of narcotics, having sold a Task Force informant marijuana on three occasions within the past ten months. Armed with an arrest warrant for Smith, the Sheriff’s Office utilized its Special Response Team to execute the warrant.

Officers executed the search warrant without incident but were unable to locate Joey Hampton. Smith was at his residence at the time and arrested for three fifth degree felony counts of trafficking in marijuana. He remains incarcerated in lieu of bond pending his initial court appearance.

Hampton remains at large and is considered armed and dangerous. He was armed with a .40 handgun at the time of the homicide and 7.62 mm rounds were discovered during a search of his Zanesville residence. Hampton is 6’ 185 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

Please phone the Sheriff’s Office at 740-376-7070 ext. 0 with any information.
