On 20 May 11 Deputy Sheriff Lockhart was dispatched
to 316 Salster Road, Fleming, to assist the Ohio State Highway
Patrol with an investigation of a traffic crash. At the scene,
the individual involved in the crash, Darren R. Layne, age 30,
205 Sixth Avenue, Parkersburg, said he crashed his car somewhere
on Blue Knob Road. Mr. Layne heavily slurred his speech as he
spoke and stated he drank three or four shots of whiskey while
he waited for the Highway Patrol to arrive. Also under the influence
of Xanax, Mr. Layne was unable to provide a phone number of
a friend to stay with for the remainder of the morning. Consequently,
Deputy Lockhart arrested Mr. Layne for disorderly conduct by
intoxication and transported him to the Washington County Jail.
At the jail Mr. Layne tested .232 BAC.
On 20 May Eric C. Anderson, age 43, 900 Tresch
Road, Fleming, reported he hid $5,000 in a refrigerator in his
locked, detached garage on 15 May and when he checked for the
money on 17 May at 7 pm it was missing. This case remains under
On 20 May 11 Deputy Sheriff Anderson and the
Devola, Fearing and Salem fire departments were dispatched to
a fire at Heartland at 5001 State Route 60, Marietta. Extinguished
by a sprinkler system prior to the arrival of the fire departments,
the fire appears to have been caused by a leaking hot water
heater. Water from the leak contacted the heater’s electrical
system, causing it to spark and smoke. Damage to the area around
the water heater was minimal.
On 20 May 11 the director of Emeritus, 150
Browns Road, Marietta, reported finding a discrepancy in the
facility’s controlled medication log. This case remains
under investigation (790).

were processed into the Washington County Jail:
Darren Robert Layne, age 30, 205 Sixth Avenue,
Parkersburg, for disorderly conduct by intoxication, a misdemeanor.
