On 22 Sep 10 Eula Yoho-Wilson, age 85, 1130 Coal Run Road, Marietta, reported she received a phone call from individuals purporting to be her grandson and a police officer in Canada. The callers claimed Ms. Wilson’s grandson was arrested for DUI and asked her to wire $2,136 for a fine and court costs. An employee at one store refused to wire the money because they thought it was a scam but Ms. Wilson received a second phone call from the alleged officer requesting the money. The alleged officer assured Ms. Wilson it was not a scam and directed her to a second location where she successfully wired the funds, paying an additional $125 in fees. The suspects utilizing these scams often ask the person they are calling not to contact family members to reportedly avoid embarrassment and to not spread news of the alleged arrest. The Sheriff’s Office urges local residents to be aware of such scams and to verify any such phone calls with other family members prior to wiring any funds.

On 22 Sep 10 Kim Spencer, age 53, 52 Saint Andrews Boulevard, Belpre, reported she just crossed a bridge in front of her residence when she observed two juveniles between twelve and fourteen years old and two juveniles either five or six years old standing along the roadway. As she passed the bridge Ms. Spencer said she believes one of the juveniles threw a rock at her vehicle and shattered the rear window of her 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser. This incident remains under investigation (500).

On 22 Sep 10 Lt. Stackpole and the fire departments from Little Hocking and Belpre responded to a trailer fire at the residence of Billy Toncray, age 34, at 813 Congress Road, Belpre. Mr. Toncray and his girlfriend departed the residence earlier in the evening and when they returned Mr. Toncray noticed a fire emanating from the kitchen of the trailer. The accidental fire caused substantial damage to the trailer and its contents. No injuries were reported.

On 22 Sep 10 Thomas McKenzie, age 59, 2901 Barth Road, Belpre, reported an individual riding a motorcycle pulled alongside him as he drove westbound on Veto Road. Mr. McKenzie stated the motorcyclist yelled at him for talking on a cell phone and kicked his truck as they traveled at a low rate of speed. The motorcyclist accelerated in front of Mr. McKenzie’s and allegedly slowed, causing Mr. McKenzie to strike the motorcycle and to partially run over the rear of the bike. When he stopped to check on the motorcyclist, Mr. McKenzie claims he was attacked and the mirror on his truck was damaged. The motorcyclist, who requested he be transported to the hospital, said he rode up next to Mr. McKenzie’s vehicle to confront him for cutting him of moments earlier. He said he then attempted to pass the truck but Mr. McKenzie accelerated and bumped the motorcycle as he attempted to enter the lane. After the impact the motorcyclist alleged that Mr. McKenzie exited his truck, approached him aggressively, ripped his shirt and punched him in the mouth. The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries. This case remains under investigation (1293).
