BANK EMPLOYEE ARRESTED FOR THEFT OF $58,000
On 13 Nov 09 a Lower Salem resident reported an acquaintance
of hers who is employed at the Lower Salem branch of Peoples
Bank confessed to her in July that she withdrew a large sum
of money from her account without permission. The victim stated
she previously allowed Melinda S. Norris, age 47, 671 Baker
Ridge Road, Macksburg, to withdraw money from her account as
a loan and that Ms. Norris repaid the money. However, on this
occasion the victim stated without consent, Ms. Norris withdrew
$50,000 on 6 Jun 09 and $8,000 on 30 Jun 09. During a conversation
between the victim and Ms. Norris which was monitored by Detectives
Johnson and Parks, Ms. Norris twice admitted taking money from
the victim’s account and commented that she needed the
funds to pay for impending medical bills. Interviewed by the
Detectives, Ms. Norris admitted withdrawing $50,000 but could
not recollect withdrawing the $8,000. Though when shown a withdrawal
slip with a signature matching that of the $50,000 withdrawal
slip, Ms. Norris said she probably did withdraw the $8,000.
As a result of their investigation, Detective Johnson arrested
Ms. Norris for second and third degree felony charges of theft.
After spending approximately a day in jail Ms. Norris posted
$50,000 bail through a bondsman and was released.
