On 16 Aug 09 a witness reported she was returning
home from work around 6:00 am when she observed several individuals
standing outside a car at 30 Stanleyville Road in Whipple.
Believing something to be amiss, the witness followed the vehicle
to obtain a license plate number and as she passed 30 Stanleyville
Road she noticed the mailbox was damaged. While patrolling
for the suspects’ vehicle, the Highway Patrol informed
Deputy Sheriffs Carr and Simmons that they just responded to
a crash involving the suspects’ vehicle. Interviewed
at the Highway Patrol Post after testing .167 BAC, the seventeen
year old driver admitted traveling from Waterford, through
Marietta, through Lowell and on to Whipple with three friends
after attending a party and consuming alcohol. The driver said
he, along with his seventeen year old and two eighteen year
old passengers would stop at random locations and hit mailboxes
with a metal pipe that was in the vehicle. Located and questioned,
the three other suspects confirmed the driver’s story
and one of them commented that he set mail from one of the
boxes on fire. Summonses for the eighteen year olds for criminal
damaging and delinquency by criminal damaging for the seventeen
year olds will soon be requested.
