On 19 May 09 Randy R. Norris Jr., age 20,
88 James Road, Fleming, reported the Ohio State Highway Patrol
notified him that his 1995 Chevy S-10 was involved in a wreck
on Patten Mills Road on 15 May. Mr. Norris said the vehicle
was parked in a field at his mother’s residence at 1460
State Route 676, Stockport, and he believes it was stolen on
either 13 or 14 May. This case remains under investigation
(1184).
On 19 May 09 Deputy Sheriff Smeeks issued
minor misdemeanor citations for possession of marijuana to
Shane M. Chutes, age 21, 230 S. Maple Drive, Mineral Wells,
and Ryan E. Smith, age 20, 2206 26th Avenue, Parkersburg. Stopped
for having an inoperable brake light and for accelerating to
60 mph then slowing to 45 mph on State Route 7, Mr. Chutes
and his passenger Mr. Smith appeared nervous. Prompted to search
the vehicle by a canine indication for drugs, Deputy Smeeks
discovered two bags of marijuana near the vehicle’s center
console. When questioned, Mr. Chutes and Mr. Smith both claimed
ownership of a bag of marijuana.
On 19 May 09 Deputy Sheriff Carr responded
to the scene of death of an eighty year old Vincent resident.
The woman’s death appears to be due to natural causes;
no foul play is suspected.
On 19 May 09 a seventy-two year old Newport
resident reported he received a phone call from a subject purporting
to be his grandson saying he was in a car wreck in Canada and
needed $500 to be released from jail and an additional $2,900
to cover the damage from the crash. This scam occurs often
and is difficult to investigate once money is transferred via
Western Union or a similar service. Once the victim told the
caller that he could rot in jail, the calls requesting money
ceased. This case remains under investigation (296).
