VEHICLE FIRE INVESTIGATION RESULTS IN ARREST
Around 12:00 am last night Lt. Wilson and Deputy Sheriff Thorpe
responded to a vehicle fire in the vicinity of the 1.5 mile
marker of Lake Road in Dunham Township. The Dunham Volunteer
Fire Department also responded and extinguished the fire prior
to the Deputies’ arrival. From the license plate, Deputy
Thorpe determined the owner of the Dodge Stratus was Teddy
L. Church, age 42, 253 Lake Road, Belpre. Interviewed at his
home, Mr. Church initially denied knowing the whereabouts of
the vehicle and said he had been home the entire evening. Deputy
Thorpe pressed Mr. Church on inconsistencies in his statement
at which time M. Church said he drove the Dodge to where it
was found and the vehicle caught fire. He said while the car
was burning he walked home, made a sandwich and went to bed
without phoning emergency to extinguish the fire.
The Deputies viewed an empty gas can sitting near the entrance
to Mr. Church’s home as well as a fire extinguisher that
Mr. Church’s wife said was in the Dodge. Based on their
investigation and other evidence gathered at the scene Deputy
Thorpe arrested Mr. Church for a fourth degree felony charge
of arson. He remains incarcerated without bond pending his
initial court appearance Monday.
