On 3 Oct 08 Deputy Sheriff Anderson responded
to the scene of death of an eighty-eight year old Newport resident.
The woman’s death appears natural; no foul play is suspected.
On 3 Oct 08 Melanie L. Stephan, age 46, 180
Maynard Drive, Little Hocking, reported on 26 Sep she learned
from her gas company that her estranged husband Mark, age 49,
unknown address, shut off the service to her residence. A violation
of a protection order she has against him, Mrs. Stephan said
the gas company reestablished the service two days later. Due
to the actions of Mr. Stephan, Deputy Sheriff Carr requested
a summons for him for violating the terms of a protection order.
On 3 Oct 08 Deputy Sheriff Anderson issued
a citation to Kimberly Strause, age 39, 419 A Henderson Avenue,
Williamstown, for operating a vehicle with plates that expired
in August 2008. Deputy Anderson stopped Ms. Strause on State
Route 60 near milepost nineteen in Waterford Township.
On 3 Oct 08 Charlotte L. Coulter, age 68,
12652 State Route 676, Watertown, reported upon viewing a bank
statement she determined a check from her deceased husband’s
checkbook was forged for $447.94 and used to purchase items
at Wal Mart. Further inspection revealed a total of seven checks
were stolen from the same checkbook. This case remains under
investigation (790).
On 3 Oct 08 Deputy Sheriffs Anderson and Thorpe
encountered a group of juveniles acting suspiciously at the
Warren High School football game. When questioned, two of the
juveniles said they had been smoking cigarettes but the other
juvenile in the group, a sixteen year old Marietta resident,
said they were smoking marijuana. At that time the teenager
revealed from her purse a change purse containing a marijuana
pipe. Because they were unable to prove the other teenagers
were smoking marijuana, Deputy Anderson requested a summons
for the seventeen year old to appear in Juvenile Court for
being delinquent.
On 3 Oct 08 Oleta Church, age 37, 253 Lake
Road, Belpre, reported she was arguing with her husband Teddy,
age 42, the previous evening when he threw an open can of beer
at her head. The can barely missed her but Mrs. Church said
the incident caused her to be in fear for her safety. As a
result, Deputy Sheriff Mankins arrested Mr. Church for domestic
violence and transported him to the Washington County Jail.
On 3 Oct 08 Deputy Sheriff Smeeks arrested
Branden W. Bennett, age 20, 931 Jacoby Road, Copley, OH, for
possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia. Stopping
the vehicle for speeding on State Route 7, Deputy Smeeks’ canine
indicated the presence of drugs in the vehicle. Mr. Bennett
admitted the two marijuana pipes and a bag of marijuana found
in the vehicle all belonged to him.
On 3 Oct 08 Velinda K. Haught, age 30, 425
Dodd Run Road, Marietta, reported an individual visiting her
son took her family’s Garmin portable GPS unit. Ms. Haught
said her son located his friend and recovered the GPS. This
case remains open pending an interview with the suspect (1184).
On 3 Oct 08 a seventeen year old Cutler resident
reported another student punched him in the back of the head
as he boarded his bus at Warren High School that afternoon.
The student said he did not know who the assailant was but
he believes the suspect hit him because he intervened to stop
a fight minutes earlier. This case remains under investigation
(790).
On 3 Oct 08 Thomas E. Thurston III, age 38,
103 Sylvan Way, Marietta, his niece and her husband Shaine
D. McKnight, age 19, recently moved into his residence and
that Mr. McKnight was asked to move out around 4 pm. Mr. McKnight
complied and left the residence but returned at 8 pm and tried
to enter the home through a side door to get his five week
old son. Attempting to prevent his entrance, Mr. Thurston stood
in front of Mr. McKnight, at which time Mr. McKnight punched
him in the face. After Mr. McKnight was finally forced out
of the home Mr. McKnight’s father, Vernon McKnight, age
42, 280 Masonic Park Lane, Marietta, appeared and demanded
Mr. Thurston give him his grandson. When Mr. Thurston refused
to obey the order the elder McKnight threatened to shoot Mr.
Thurston and his wife if they did not comply. McKnight then
bent over the bed of his truck in a motion that Mr. and Mrs.
Thurston believed was him retrieving a gun and caused them
to fear for their safety. Following an investigation Deputy
Sheriff arrested Shaine McKnight for domestic violence and
Vernon McKnight for two counts of domestic violence and transported
them to the Washington County Jail.

were processed into the Washington County Jail:
Brian Thomas McGrail, age 42, 745 Greene Street
Apt. D, Marietta, for failure to comply with the order/signal
of an officer, for driving under a suspended license, for failure
to control, OVI and for speeding, all misdemeanors. McGrail
was arrested on Pike Street by Patrolman Kampmeier of the Marietta
City Police Department and processed into the Washington County
Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 4:23 am.
Kimberly Ann Courtney, age 45, 17382 Alfred
Brown Road, Dexter City, for failure to appear at a court ordered
hearing on unpaid fines, a misdemeanor. Courtney was arrested
near milepost thirteen on Interstate 77 by Major Winstanley
of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and processed
into the Washington County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 3:10 pm.
Teddy Leon Church, age 42, 53 Lake Road, Vincent, for failure
to appear at a court ordered hearing on unpaid fines and for
domestic violence, both misdemeanors. Church was arrested at
his residence by Deputy Sheriff Mankins and processed into
the Washington County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 4:15 pm.
Eric Shane Jordan, age 37, 5255 Wooten Road, Athens, for felony
charges of automobile theft, receiving stolen property and
failure to appear and for a misdemeanor charge of failure to
appear. Jordan was arrested at 321 Main Street by Patrolman
Davis of the Belpre City Police Department and processed into
the Washington County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 9:05 pm.
Robert Michael Russell, age 19, 3275 Highland Ridge Road,
Lowell, for failure to appear at a court ordered hearing on
unpaid fines, a misdemeanor. Russell was arrested in Salem
Township by Deputy Sheriff Simmons and processed into the Washington
County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 9:28 pm.
Vernon Dee McKnight, age 42, 280 Masonic Park Lane, Marietta,
for two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence. McKnight was
arrested at his residence by Deputy Sheriff Mankins and processed
into the Washington County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 9:50 pm.
Shaine Dee McKnight, age 19, 103 Sylvan Way, Marietta, for
domestic violence, a misdemeanor. McKnight was arrested at
his residence by Deputy Sheriff Mankins and processed into
the Washington County Jail on 3 Oct 08 at 9:55 pm.
