On 28 Jul 08 Deputy Sheriff Smeeks conducted a traffic stop on an SUV that was speeding on Interstate 77. The driver, Damario Harriston, age 30, 681 Turney Road Apt. 128C, Bedford, OH, and his passenger and father, Herbert V. Harriston, age 49, 11721 Jesse Avenue, Cleveland, both appeared extremely nervous. Prior to writing Harriston a warning for speeding, Deputy Smeeks conducted a pat down for weapons and discovered a marijuana joint concealed in a cigar pack. The find prompted Deputy Smeeks to perform a sniff of the vehicle using his canine. Following a canine indication of the presence of drugs, Deputy Smeeks searched the vehicle and found a loaded .357 revolver hidden in a folded garment bag in the backseat. As a result of the traffic stop, Deputy Smeeks issued a minor misdemeanor citation to Damario Harriston for possession of marijuana and arrested Herbert Harriston for carrying a concealed weapon.
