On 6 Jun 08 Lt. Wilson began a pursuit after
nearly being struck by a vehicle while standing outside in
the parking lot of the BP in Belpre. The vehicle, which struck
a concrete barrier as it exited the bridge, struck a small
retaining wall, veered off the wall and came to rest on Main
Street. As Lt. Wilson approached the vehicle it began to drive
northbound on two flat tires. Ignoring stop signs and traveling
at a low rate of speed, the driver continued to Florence Street
operating on its rims. Finally coming to a stop near the 800
Block on Florence Street, the driver, Gary W. Schnitz Sr.,
age 51, 1009 Florence Street, Belpre, refused to open the driver’s
side door. Lt. Wilson opened the door and Mr. Schnitz again
refused to exit. To gain compliance, Lt. Wilson utilized his
Taser and physically removed Mr. Schnitz from the vehicle.
Unable to be booked into the jail because of his blood alcohol
concentration, Schnitz was hospitalized until deemed safe to
incarcerate. He was ultimately charged with a felony charge
of failure to comply with the order/signal of an officer and
for misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, OVI and hit-skip.
