On 15 May 08 Major Winstanley conducted a
traffic stop on a vehicle on Pike Street after its driver nearly
caused a crash when turning from Acme Street. Speaking to the
driver, Justin A. Jones, age 21, 632 Seventh Street, Marietta,
Major Winstanley noticed a strong odor of marijuana. Major
Winstanley arrested Mr. Jones for driving under a suspended
license, at which time he also informed Jones if he was in
possession of drugs at the jail he would face additional charges.
Upon hearing that, Jones relinquished a bag of marijuana he
had concealed in his pants. Also charged with possession of
drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, Jones was transported
to the Washington County Jail.
On 15 May 08 Deputy Sheriff Travaglio investigated
the possible theft of a water heater, stove and refrigerator
from a home at 912 Lancaster Street, Marietta. Deputy Travaglio
interviewed the homeowner, Beverly Munoz, age 46, who stated
the home is under foreclosure but she has not yet been ordered
to vacate the premises. Ms. Munoz said she purchased the items
and had her son move the appliances into her garage. This case
remains open pending the receipt of further information from
the lien holder.
On 15 May 08 Chief Bourne of the New Matamoras
Police Department reported he was off duty but witnessed a
male he knew as Gale A. Hendershot, age 43, 5215 State Route
260, New Matamoras, striking a parking barrier in the parking
lot of Peoples Bank. Deputy Sheriff Eddy responded and noticed
Mr. Hendershot had a strong odor of alcohol and could hardly
understand Hendershot’s heavily slurred speech. Mr. Hendershot
attempted field sobriety tests but failed miserably, as he
almost fell to the ground. Arrested for .17 breath OVI, Hendershot
tested .245 BAC at the Washington County Jail.
ADDITIONAL DRUG TRAFFICKING ARREST
As part of the round up of arrests of drug trafficking suspects
that began yesterday, Marietta Police Department’s Sgt.
Ellenwood last night arrested David Martindell, age 27, 1005
Front Street, Marietta. Martindell is charged with a third
degree felony of trafficking in crack cocaine within 1000 feet
of an elementary school. He is currently being held at the
Washington County Jail pending his initial appearance.
CHARGES ON MARK TILTON FILED
On 15 May 08 Lt. Schuck requested a summons for Mark J. Tilton,
age 39, 12622 State Route 60, Lowell, for first degree misdemeanor
charges of assault and aggravated menacing. Stemming from an
incident that transpired on 21 Mar 08, Lt. Schuck’s affidavit
alleges that the victim in the case, Andrew Mahoney, age 39,
508 Bear Creek Road, Lowell, believed Tilton would cause him
serious physical harm. Witnesses confirm that at the time of
the incident Tilton was seriously enraged at improprieties
he perceived Mahoney committed and in his state of mind could
have killed Mahoney. On several occasions Tilton made comments
threatening to rip out Mahoney’s throat, causing Mahoney
such distress that he armed himself with a handgun in case
Tilton would return.
Prior to Tilton’s departure from the scene of the incident,
Mahoney said he entered his own vehicle to leave when he heard
someone speaking. Thinking they were speaking to him, Mahoney
rolled down his window, at which time Tilton punched him in
the face. Witnesses present confirmed seeing Tilton punch Mahoney
through the open window.
The following individuals
were processed into the Washington County Jail:
Justin Allan Jones, age 21, 632 Seventh Street,
Marietta, for driving under a suspended license, possession
of drugs, possession of drug paraphernalia and for failing
to obey the right of way, all misdemeanors. Jones was arrested
on Pike Street in Marietta by Major Winstanley of the Washington
County Sheriff’s Office and processed into the Washington
County Jail on 15 May 08 at 9:50 am.
Scott Joseph Byers, age 24, 488 Beach Drive, Belpre, for failure
to register as a registered sex offender, a felony. Byers was
arrested at his residence by Detective Hiatt of the Washington
County Sheriff’s Office and processed into the Washington
County Jail on 15 May 08 at 10:15 am.
Christopher Michael Estes, age 29, 109 Fifteenmile Creek Road,
Marietta, for driving under a suspended license, a misdemeanor.
Estes was arrested on State Route 26 by Deputy Sheriff McLeish
and processed into the Washington County Jail on 15 May 08
at 4:11 pm.
William Joseph Hesson, age 46, 49755 State Route 145, Woodsfield,
for two misdemeanor counts of failure to appear at a court
ordered hearing on unpaid fines. Hesson was picked up at the
Morgan County line by Deputy Sheriff McLeish and processed
into the Washington County Jail on 15 May 08 at 6:43 pm.
