SHERIFF AIMS TO COMBAT MEDICAL COSTS
AT WASHINGTON COUNTY JAIL
In order to offset the ever increasing costs
of medical care, Washington County Sheriff Larry Mincks will
soon implement a policy of billing convicted inmates a medical
co-pay for medical services rendered to them while incarcerated
in the Washington County Jail.
As part of this policy, all inmate medical
fees will be deducted from the inmate’s commissary account;
an account funded by the inmate themselves or their family
for purchasing snacks. While no inmate shall be denied access
to medical services due to the lack of funds, if the inmate
has no funds in his/her account, a past due payment shall be
carried on the inmate. If, at anytime in the future funds are
placed into his/her account, the medical fees will be deducted
at that time.
Some examples of medical co-pays are: a nurse’s
sick call visit, five dollars; a doctor’s or dentist’s
sick call visit, seven dollars; and prescription fee, three
dollars. Under the Ohio Revised Code, all proceeds from these
fees will be deposited into the prisoner’s commissary
fund and will be used for purchasing equipment, supplies and
services for the inmates.
