While on patrol on County Road 544 the late evening of 2 Sep 04, Deputy Sheriff McLeish observed two vehicles parked in the lot of Hills Church. One of the vehicles contained two individuals, one identifying himself as Todd A. Covey, age 37, 105 Gilman Street Lot 7, Marietta. Through a computer check Deputy McLeish learned the second vehicle was registered to Patricia D. Covey, age 34, 105 Gilman Street Lot 7, Marietta, and that Mrs. Covey has a protection order against Mr. Covey. In an effort to avoid getting Mr. Covey in trouble, Mrs. Covey gave false information to Deputy McLeish on several occasions. Mrs. Covey finally admitted her true identity and as a result was issued a summons for making a false statement to mislead a public official. Deputy McLeish also arrested Mr. Covey for violating a court ordered protection order and transported him to the Washington County Jail.

On 2 Sep 04 Shane Hardie, age 28, an inmate at the Washington County Jail, reported another inmate used his calling card without permission. An investigation by Deputy Sheriff Stackpole determined Mr. Hardie bartered the use of his phone card for two Swiss Cake Rolls and supervised the individual as he used the phone card.

SEXUAL ASSAULT SUSPECT LOCATED AND APPREHENDED IN OKLAHOMA

Stemming from information relayed to the Detectives Bureau from the Children’s Services Bureau, Randy M. Styer, age 48, 27486 State Route 7, Marietta, was arrested in Poteau, OK, by members of the Leflore County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Park Service for being a fugitive from justice on one count of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a third degree felony. Through investigative techniques the Detective Bureau was able to locate Styer in a remote location of Oklahoma. Detectives Jenkins and Kapple of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office traveled to Oklahoma to conduct the investigation and assist in the arrest of Styer. Mr. Styer waived extradition and arrangements are underway to transport him to Washington County.

During the investigation Detectives learned that Mr. Styer was the self-appointed spokesperson of his household in which there were three families, including the fifteen-year-old victim. The fifteen year old informed Detectives that Mr. Styer slept with her in the same bedroom while his wife slept elsewhere and that through three sexual encounters with Mr. Styer she is pregnant with his child. Shortly after learning the victim was interviewed by Detectives, Mr. Styer and other female family members fled the area, only to be located in Oklahoma at the end of last month. The investigation is continuing and other charges are being considered.
