On 1 Jul 04 Sgt. Jobes investigated a single vehicle
collision at 425 Arends Ridge Road, Marietta. After placing
her three year old boy in a car seat in the front passenger
seat of her 1989 Mercedes, the home’s resident, Gary Beebe,
was rounding the rear of the vehicle when the toddler inadvertently
moved the gear shift from the parked position. The vehicle then
coasted down a driveway and coming to rest after striking a
ditch. The child escaped unharmed while the vehicle sustained
moderate damage.
On 1 Jul 04 Deputy Sheriff Mankins investigated
a two vehicle collision on Grandview Avenue, thirty feet south
of Maple Street in New Matamoras. Jack D. Smith, age 60, 51140
State Route 7, New Matamoras, was traveling southbound on Grandview
Avenue in his Hyundai and as a result of swerving to avoid hitting
a cat, struck the rear quarter panel of a parked Pontiac owned
by Linda E. Kirkbride, 1002 Grandview Avenue, New Matamoras.
Both vehicles sustained moderate damage and Mr. Smith suffered
no injuries.
On 1 Jul 04 Evette Carpenter, age 26, 96 Main
Street, Lower Salem, reported while driving along Main Street
to return their children to her residence, she witnessed her
estranged husband Robert, age 30, exit his vehicle down the
street and attempt to initiate a fight with several individuals
sitting on a porch at 201 Main Street. One of the residents
stated Mr. Carpenter hit him, refused to leave the property
when asked to do so and continuously berated the other residents
in an ill-conceived attempt to trigger a fight. The witnesses
further stated Mr. Carpenter was traveling with another woman
and four children in his vehicle. During an interview, Deputy
Sheriff Rhodes learned Mr. Carpenter’s license was suspended
and noticed he was unsteady on his feet and reeked of alcohol.
Accordingly, Mr. Carpenter was arrested for driving under an
FRA suspended license, assault, criminal trespassing, disorderly
conduct by intoxication and for four counts of endangering children
and transported to the Washington County Jail.
On 1 Jul 04 Carl Lafatch, age 34, reported his
twenty-six year old wife left their residence Wednesday afternoon
with her cell phone and black Cadillac STS and he has not heard
from her since. This case remains under investigation (690).
On 1 Jul 04 Amanda Carpenter, age 23, 217 Fourth
Street, Lowell, reported while picking up her kids at their
father’s house, the father threatened her. An investigation
concluded the allegation was unfounded (586).
On 1 Jul 04 Lt. Wilson and Deputy Sheriff Malone
were dispatched to the Kardex building on State Route 7 in Marietta
to meet with Sara Selvey, age 25, 1427 23rd Street, Parkersburg.
Ms. Selvey stated her former live-in boyfriend James Anthony
Whyte, age 55, 1126 46th Street, Vienna, WV, was at her place
of employment in violation of a protection order issued in Wood
County, West Virginia. While arresting Mr. Whyte at the Kardex
building for violating a protection order, Deputy Malone learned
Mr. Whyte also had an outstanding warrant from Wood County for
violating a protection order. Mr. Whyte was then transported
to the Washington County Jail where he is being held without
bail pending extradition to Wood County.
On 1 Jul 04 Deputy Sheriff Farrell issued a citation
to Dorothy Smith, age 35, 255 Highland Ridge Road, Marietta,
for illegally placing a sign within the right of way at the
intersection of State Routes 821 and 60. On 26 Jun 04 Ms. Smith’s
sign was returned and she was informed on the law concerning
the placement of sign along the road. On 28 Jun Ms. Smith replaced
the sign at the same intersection and was issued a citation
for the offense.
The following individuals
were processed into the Washington County Jail:
Terry Lee Johnson Sr., age 41, 1057 Fourth Avenue
Apt. 2, Gallipolis, OH, for aggravated menacing, a felony. Johnson
was arrested on State Route 7 by the Ohio State Highway Patrol
and processed into the Washington County Jail on 1 Jul 04 at
12:15 pm.
Frankie Estep, age 39, 1935 Broadway Street, Stockport,
for violating the terms of his probation, a misdemeanor. Estep
was picked up at the Muskingum City Jail in Zanesville by Deputy
Sheriff Underwood and processed into the Washington County Jail
on 1 Jul 04 at 2:50 pm.
James Anthony Whyte, age 55, 1126 46th Street,
Vienna, WV, for a felony charge of being a fugitive from justice
and for a misdemeanor charge of violating the terms of a protection
order. Whyte was arrested in Reno by Deputy Sheriff Malone and
processed into the Washington County Jail on 1Jul 04 at 3:25
pm.
Robert Edward Carpenter, age 30, 2020 Bear Run
Road, Reno, for assault, criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct
by intoxication and for four counts of endangering children,
all misdemeanors. Carpenter was arrested in Lower Salem by Deputy
Sheriff Rhodes and processed into the Washington County Jail
on 1 Jul 04 at 7:40 pm.
