FRAUDULENT SCHEME ALERT
In December of last year an elderly Washington
County resident received word by mail he was the winner of a
$450,000 prize. An ensuing phone call from an individual named
Mike in Canada requested the resident send $12,500 to cover
customs charges in order to claim the prize. When the county
resident informed Mike he could not afford to send the money,
Mike said he would send a cashier’s check to cover the
customs charges. After receiving and depositing the cashier’s
check into his account, the county resident received a call
a day later from Mike requesting $7,000 and later $1,500. Subsequent
to mailing the checks to Canada the county resident was informed
by his bank the cashier’s check was counterfeit and his
bank account would be frozen until the overdraft was repaid.
The Sheriff’s Office urges residents to exercise diligence
when receiving offers for substantial prizes by mail and phone.
Any individual with information regarding this or any other
fraudulent scheme is requested to contact a law enforcement
agency.
